From the Principals Desk
As Term 3 draws to a close and we look forward to an exciting Term 4, I am pleased to once again be able to reflect on some amazing highlights from the past five weeks that showcase the diversity of opportunities at Pimlico and the quality of the teaching and learning that is occurring.
Our students have excelled in a wide range of activities this term. More than 350 students took part in the 2025 Townsville Eisteddfod, showcasing their talent across music, choral, and instrumental programs. The results marked one of Pimlico’s most successful eisteddfods ever. Our Junior and Senior chess teams performed strongly in the Term 3 Interschool Chess Tournament, earning top placements and moving up a division for the next event. Our boys’ volleyball team competed at the Queensland Senior Schools Cup, finishing among the state’s top teams
We were proud of the five Year 10 students who represented Pimlico at the North Queensland Constitutional Convention for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, exploring constitutional law and sharing perspectives with peers.
Reading and literary achievements were also celebrated, with our Year 7/8 team representing Pimlico at the Reader’s Cup State Finals in Brisbane, and the school community embracing Book Week with the theme “Books and Adventure”, demonstrating creativity and enthusiasm through imaginative costumes.
Year 10 students engaged in a hands-on AVISTA STEM experience, exploring careers in flight, rockets, propulsion systems, and autonomous technologies. Meanwhile, our Year 9 students took part in their first Mock Job Interviews, gaining valuable real-world experience with overwhelmingly positive feedback.
Our school community also demonstrated the value it places on connecting with each other both within and beyond school hours, with events such as the Community Concert featuring Pimlico’s Got Talent, and the Junior School Disco which had a Hollywood Masquerade theme and was filled with fun, music, prizes, and community connection.
All of these achievements sit alongside some outstanding report card results for students. Student learning is the primary function of schools, and I am pleased to be able to share that the percentage of students achieving a C or better, along with the percentage of students achieving an A or a B, have both been steadily increasing over the previous few years.
When you consider all of the above, it is no surprise that Pimlico has been recognised by News Corp Australia as one of the top 100 secondary schools in Queensland — a reflection of the dedication of our staff, students, and the wider school community.
It has been a busy and successful term for Pimlico, and Term 4 promises more opportunities and achievements. Thank you to all students, staff, and community members whose commitment ensures our school continues to thrive.
Kind regards
Stephen Baskerville
Executive Principal

ART
Artscape 2025
Pimlico’s Artscape exhibition is our annual showcase event featuring the works of visual arts, media and film students across Years 7-12.
Each year, we like to embrace a theme for our Opening, which is a night also supported by XDance, music, drama and hospitality students. For 2025, we encourage you to find your shadiest wide-brimmed hat, dust off your best pair of leather boots and make sure those hardy blue jeans fit, so you can ride on into an aesthetic inspired by Outback Australia.
All are welcome!

Townsville Interschool Theatre Sports Competition
Many of our Junior Drama Club students recently took the stage at the Townsville Interschool Theatre Sports Competition. Both teams delivered fantastic performances across three rounds of improvisation, judged by actors from the local theatre company, TheatreiNQ.
One of our teams earned an impressive second place, proudly representing Pimlico with creativity and teamwork.
We’re excited to keep building our theatre sports culture at Pimlico and can’t wait to return next term!

SCIENCE
Year 10 AVISTA STEM talk
Last week, our Year 10 students got a look at some exciting STEM opportunities when we were visited by AVISTA School Pathways Program.
The amazing Gabrielle dazzled our students with a hands-on science experience exploring just how diverse STEM is in their future career paths including
- Flight and aviation
- Rockets and propulsion systems
- Autonomous systems
The best part? An extra special robotic visitor!
AVISTA is supported by the Department of Defence’s School Pathways Program, delivering a range of exciting learning experiences to students, allowing them to see how vast the STEM field is and encouraging future scientists, engineers and innovators.

GLOBAL STUDIES
Growing Global Competence Fund
Recently, Pimlico State High School, in collaboration with Townsville State High School, was successful in receiving a substantial grant through the Department of Education International’s Growing Global Competence Fund (GGCF).
The GGCF provides Queensland state schools with the opportunity to apply for funding to develop projects that foster global competence within their school communities.
The focus for Pimlico and Townsville SHS is the Youth to Action Queensland (YTAQ) project in Fiji. YTAQ aims to empower students in Australia and Fiji to tackle real-world challenges in their communities through projects aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The initiative will culminate in an annual conference, where schools across Queensland can connect—virtually or in person—to collaborate and mentor students in Pacific Island nations and regional Queensland communities, beginning with Fiji in 2026.
Recently, students from both schools spent a day together developing a plan to implement their project. They shared ideas about their goals and discussed the projects they have been working on over the last two years.
Later this year, seven students from Pimlico and Townsville SHS will travel to Fiji to work with local schools on a range of projects and begin preparations for the 2026 conference.

Inside Advanced Manufacturing Tour
The Manufacturing Hub offered PSHS an immersion through Advanced Manufacturing 2025 – an exclusive showcase of Queensland’s cutting-edge manufacturing industry.
This initiative offered students a rare opportunity to go behind the scenes of some of the state’s most innovative manufacturers, including EDMS Australia, Boss Embossers and Rising Sun FPV.
These businesses are leading the way in advanced processes, automation, robotics, lean manufacturing, sustainability, and more.
A big thank you to Manufacturing Hub Qld , EDMS Australia Boss Embossers and Rising Sun FPV for having us.

Civil Try a Trade event
Construction Skills Queensland (CSQ), and Landscape Skills Queensland, through the Gateway to Industry Skills program are offered an immersion of Civil Construction, hosting a Civil Try a Trade event last week.

A big thank you to Construction Skills Queensland - CSQ Landscape Skills

HOSPITALITY
Year 10 Collaborative Cooking
Last week, the Year 10 FSX students designed, produced and delivered High Tea style takeaway boxes for staff around the school. Working collaboratively in teams, students investigated, planned and prepared a selection of sweet and savoury finger foods and complimentary beverages suitable for their High Tea experience.

SCHOOL YARD ACTIVITIES
The Rhythm Connection
Alex from The Rhythm Connection stopped at school no Wednesday to spread joy and fun through some funky beats, building a positive effect in our school community.
If you have never been to a full moon drum circle down at The Strand or been to a Cowboys home game to see the drummers do their thing, its an amazing bonding experience which is fun for everyone involved!
Alex will be popping back 2 more times next term - 24 October & 26 November.

Choral Success at Fanfare
Our voices shone brightly as Pimlico Voices were named the Most Outstanding Choir of the Region at the Regional Final of Choral Fanfare. Congratulations to all choristers and staff for this wonderful recognition of teamwork, tone, and artistry.
Sydney Tour Triumph
Symphony, Orpheus Chamber Strings, and Blue Brass recently returned from Sydney, where they represented Pimlico at the Australian International Music Festival. Not only did they perform in the iconic Sydney Opera House, but also competed against ensembles from the USA, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and New Zealand.
- Orpheus Chamber Strings – Gold Award
- Blue Brass – Gold Award
- Pimlico Symphony Orchestra – Silver Award
These results are a testament to the countless hours of rehearsal and dedication shown by our students and staff.
Primary School Roadshow
In true Pimlico spirit, we took the joy of music into the community with our annual partner primary school roadshow. Ensembles inspired younger students with exciting performances, strengthening the bonds between Pimlico SHS and our feeder schools – Hermit Park SS, Mundingburra SS and Currajong SS.
Community Engagements
- Blue Brass & Drumline brought energy and excitement to the Challenge Games, supporting athletes with vibrant live music.
- In a whirlwind week, Pimlico ensembles performed in six concerts across five days at the Australian Festival of Chamber Music (AFCM). Featured groups included Poco Brassitos, Big Band, Blue Brass, Kingfisher, Pimlico Voices, Stage Band, and smaller chamber ensembles.
- Blue Brass perfomed at the annual Brass Under The Arches concert at St James Cathedral.
- Orpheus performed at the Townsville Community Music Centre’s Sounds of Youth Concert.
Big Band in Mackay
Our Big Band, under the direction of Mr. Kehoe, travelled to Mackay for the CQU Schools Jazz Festival, joining schools from across North Queensland for three days of performance and learning.
The festival included:

- Workshops and masterclasses with leading jazz educators and professional musicians, giving students fresh insight into improvisation, style, and ensemble balance.
- Gala concert opportunities, where students shared the stage with peers and mentors.
Pimlico Big Band came home crowned Most Outstanding Ensemble, alongside a swag of soloist and section awards – a remarkable achievement that showcases the depth of jazz talent within our program.
QREP – A First for Pimlico
This month, over 30 Pimlico students took part in the inaugural Queensland Regional Ensemble Program (QREP) – a brand-new initiative connecting school musicians with professional mentors and peers from across the state.
Through intensive rehearsals and workshops, our students experienced world-class guidance, expanded their musical skills, and built new connections in this exciting first-of-its-kind program for Student Jazz Musicians.

Townsville Eisteddfod 2025 Results (so far!)
We’ve had an outstanding start to the competition thus far in the 2025 Townsville Eisteddfod. In the first 10 days we’ve had over 350 Pimlico students take to the stage of the Denise Glasgow Performing Arts Centre, Townsville Civic Theatre and C2. We are incredibly proud of the way our students represented Pimlico during this competition.
Results we have received so far:

A huge shout out to all our Instrumental Music and Choral Program Team for their support of our Pimlico Musicians and giving up so much of their own time to support our students as these opportunities.
Pimlico Sports
Pimlico Rugby Union Stars on the Rise
There's a rugby revolution brewing at Pimlico SHS and four students are the latest stars set to shine on a representative tour to Japan. Tiffany Carney, Jocelyn Herron, Annalise Ridgill and Aden Batchelor are travelling to Tokyo this week with the inaugural Nations United rugby union representative tour. They will train with and compete against a number of women's teams across the Tokyo region and are looking forward to their first taste of international rugby competition.
This amazing achievement is but one example of many outstanding performances by Pimlico students across the 2025 Rugby season. Earlier in the year, Layne Prince and Annalise Ridgel were selected in the NQ and Qld schools 7's representative teams, together with Annaleise's inclusion to tour with the Shockwave Rugby Academy to Florida, USA in 2026. A number of junior and senior students also joined in with representative honours in the Brolgas and FNQ teams at the Qld Country Championships held locally in July. Of particular mention was TSV Brolgas representation and state level selections for Finn Hastie (U17 Boys) and Jocelyn Herron (U18 Girls), who both went on to compete at the National Rugby Championships in July.
Not only are our students kicking representative goals, our teachers are also achieving star status in the Rugby community. Resident Supercoach, Mrs Kylie Burgess, was manager for the NQ schools U16 Rugby 7's team in June, as well as assistant coach for the U16 girls Townsville Brolgas. The latter team made history at the Queensland Country Championships in July being the first junior Townsville team in over 15 years to win a Queensland Country Championship title! Congratulations Kylie!
Pimlico is immensely proud of all or our Rugby Union representatives and congratulate them on their hard work and determination. In a sport that has historically been dominated by schools from the private sector, we sure are proud and excited to witness our sporting legends continue to shine at the upcoming Rugby 7's School Block Sport competitions in Term 4.

12 & Under School State Tennis Championships
After a 1-2 finish in the regional trials, Leo and Zach set off together for the Tennis State Championships where they finished 9th and 28th respectively. They had a great time making new friends but also hanging out together and even playing some tennis from time to time.

Lachlan Evennett racing at Sandown
Brett Francis Racing driver Lachlan Evennett has taken out round honours and claimed a second victory for the weekend in Race 3, on Day 3, of Round 4 of the Australian Formula Ford championship at Sandown International Motor Raceway in Melbourne.

Right on Target
Year 7 student Jensen Campbell and Year 8 student Storm Wright competed in a state-wide archery tournament. Although shooting took place in Townsville, scores were collated across Queensland.
Both boys achieved first place locally with personal best scores. At the state level, Jensen placed 2nd in the U14 Male Compound division, while Storm secured 3rd in the U16 Recurve division.

Denise Glasgow Interschool Public Speaking Competition
During this term, Jaiden Justin (Year 7), Abigail Craner (Year 7), Aoife Bock (Year 10), Felix Baraka Year (Year 11), and Ben Sarnyai (Year 12) performed at the Denise Glasgow Interschool Public Speaking Competition. All speakers had well-articulated thoughts and entertained the audience while continuing to hone their communication skills. Special thanks to the patron of the competition, Heather Fraser, for coaching our speakers.

Softball tour of Japan
Year 10 student Georgie was tapped on the shoulder recently to go to Japan on a softball tour where hear team played 10 games of softball in Kochi. Georgie got to try lots of new foods, plenty of sightseeing and shopping and with the help of Google Translate, learnt some new language skills!

Interschool Chess Tournament - Term 3
Our Junior and Senior teams participated in the Term 3 interschool chess tournament yesterday, with some amazing results.
- Amini, Elann, Landon & Jack scored merit ribbons for a high performance:
- 2nd place individual winner with 6 wins out of 7 games: Alexander
- Pimlico Junior team placed 3rd!
- Pimlico Senior team placed 1st!
And the biggest news is, our teams have been told we'll have to move up to a higher division next tournament.

Free Skate Figure Skating
Year 7 student Quinn recently passed her Preliminary Free Skate figure skating exam down in Brisbane, this along with her previous passes means Quinn will be eligible to attend the Queensland Figure Skating competition in October. What makes this feat extra impressive is the rink in Townsville is under half the size of what she has to compete on in Brisbane and 80% of her coaching is conducted online!

Townsville Classic Seniors Volleyball Championships
Another amazing result for our Pimlico SHS volleyball players. Monsoon Thunder taking out gold, with Monsoons Lightning obtaining silver in the Townsville Classic Seniors Volleyball Championships.

Year 12 student Amaranta Ortiz-Gomez was one of only two high school students presenting at the 20th International Bat Research Conference recently. With more than 500 delegates from all over the world in attendance, there were more than 350 presentations on research, conservation and management of bats. Amaranta gave a presentation on the work done by North Queensland Wildlife Care rehabilitating micro bats that was very well received. The title of the talk was "Analysis of six years of data of micro bat rescues in North Queensland".

Readers Cup State Final
It was an early start to our journey for the Reader's Cup State Finals in Brisbane, but it was well worth it!
Our Year 7/8 team certainly held their own as first-timers at the state finals, up against 12 teams from around Queensland. They faced quite challenging questions about five different books and were rewarded with a personalised medallion for their efforts.
Students were also fortunate to enjoy two author talks by authors of books used in the competitions - Sophie Beer with "Thunderhead" and Emma Lord with "Anomaly".
Plenty of food and sugar throughout the day to keep them going, a short stop at DFO and then back to the airport.
All in a day's work!

EQI & International Students
Host Families Catch Up
Host families are at the heart of our Homestay Program - we couldn't run it without them!
At the start of this term, we held a Homestay Family Orientation, where families learned more about our school and EQI Program and had the chance to connect with others and hear from experienced families who have been part of the program for many years.
We also host monthly coffee catch- ups, giving host families a relaxed space to share experiences, discuss common challenges and support one another.
What makes Pimlico SHS program unique is the ongoing support we provide to our homestay families every step of the way.
We are so grateful for the warmth, generosity and commitment our host families show to our international students.
If you would like to join our EQI Homestay Program and make a difference in an international student's journey, please get in touch with us on 0429 045 297 or email international@pimlicoshs.eq.edu.au

Safety Tips
Recently our EQI International students had the opportunity to meet with our School Based Police Officer (SBPO), Constable Jack Ryan who spoke with them about the topics of road safety, bike safety and personal safety.
Constable Jack Ryan reminded students that in Australia everyone must follow road rules - whether they are driving, cycling or walking. For bike riders, this means always wearing a helmet and following same road rules as cars. For pedestrians, the importance of using crossings and always looking carefully before stepping onto the road.
He also explained the role of police in Australia is to keep the community safe and not to be feared or seen as a sign that you are in trouble. The role of the SBPO at our school is to the support students, so our international group were encouraged to stop and say hello if they see Constable Jack Ryan around school.
Students were also shown how police use metal detection wands under Jack's Law to search for weapons in public spaces and reminded this is done to keep the community safe. For awareness, students also had the chance to try out the different fatal vision goggles to demonstrate the impact of alcohol and drugs and how these substances can make the roads so dangerous.
Thank you Constable Jack Ryan for our helping our international students feel informed, supported and safe in their new community.

Magnetic Island Trip
On Friday 12 September, the Pimlico International students enjoyed a day trip to Magnetic Island filled with exploring the local bays, snorkelling fringing reefs and swimming. The students learnt about the local history and environment and loved their day out!
A huge thank you to Ms Marsden and Ms Taylor for providing our students with a fun, memorable and enriching experience.

Auf Wiedersehen, Addio, Farewell EQI International Students
A couple of weeks ago, we farewelled Nora, who returned home to Austria after completing nine months of study at Pimlico.
As we come to the end of this term, we will also say farewell to our Italian students, Anna and Vittoria who enjoyed a term at our school.
We have loved having each of them as part of our school community and thank the Jenkins, Adams and Ellis Families for opening their home and hearts to host our international students during their time in Townsville.
We wish Nora, Anna and Vittoria every success in their future studies. Safe travels and best wishes from all of us at Pimlico.

We know that families are complex and that anything can affect the functioning of a family. We are available from 6am to midnight, 7 days per week. Every day of the year. Parents and carers have the option to call or use our web chat. Regardless, they are always speaking with a degree qualified counsellor who is able to offer support, guidance, and therapeutic care.
Whether their concerns feel big or small, we are here to support Qld families. Phone 1300 30 1300 or visit www.parentline.com.au
