From the Principals Desk
As Term 2 comes to a close, can I thank all members of our community for their meaningful support of the school. There has been much to celebrate across the term, and much to look forward to. There are many variables impacting on education that are outside the school’s control, but was is in our control is to have a wonderful and committed group of staff who work their hardest for the students who attend the school. Across wellbeing, academic and sporting areas, as well as in the arts and music, Pimlico’s teachers have made a world of difference, as they always do.
Student Learning Outcomes:
The core tenant of schooling is to provide a high quality education. For each student, this will look a little different. Across Term 2 we have seen many different examples of personal excellence amongst our students. The graph on the left shows the trend over the last several years in students meeting the achievement standard (achieving a C or above) across all year levels and learning areas at Pimlico State High School. The graph on the right shows the same information for students achieving above the achievement standard (achieving an A or B). In both cases we are seeing significant growth in student learning outcomes at Pimlico over time. This demonstrates that when students are supported by highly capable teachers who deliberately plan for the diversity of learners they teach, students will be able to do their best. Each learner starts in a different place and we should celebrate the growth and improvement that each learner makes, regardless of the outcome. I would like to acknowledge the school’s teaching and support staff for their investment in learning about teaching using an inclusive approach that supports all learners.

Pimlico State High School A-C (left) and A-B (right) percentage of results over time
Pimlico SHS also has one of the most comprehensive Work Experience programs of any school in Queensland. Across this week our Year 11 students have been immersed in different workplaces and hundreds of Work Experience visits have been conducted by staff. The learning that comes from this is vital in supporting students as they begin to prepare to transition to a life beyond school.
I would also like to highlight how well our current Year 12 ATAR students have been performing. After Internal Assessment One in 2025, an incredible 45 students achieved a 100% result a total of 71 times. Congratulations to all of these students on their efforts and success, as well as the entire 2025 Year 12 cohort for being a kind and caring group of young people who support one another to do their best. Congratulations also to their teachers.

Attendance Matters at Our School!
It is extremely important that your child is attending school regularly and research shows that students who do attend school regularly, achieve better academically and experience more positive outcomes. We're rolling out a refreshed attendance framework to support every student’s success. Here's what to expect:
✔️ Students will receive regular updates on their attendance, with rewards each term for those with high attendance!
⏰ Students who are absent from CARE should bring in a note or have a guardian respond to the absence text message. Unexplained CARE absences will result in detentions. Please reach out if you notice any problems.
📞 If we notice inconsistencies in your child’s attendance during the day, teachers may be in touch.
🤝 Students with low attendance will be supported by our Year Level Deputies and Coordinators, working closely with families to re-engage them in learning.
You may notice more communication from staff — we’re committed to working with you to keep every student present, safe, and thriving!
Road Safety:
I am pleased to be able to communicate that the community should start to see movement on the introduction of a 40 zone around Pimlico State High School in the second half of the year. Our Safe Travel Committee has been working hard, liaising with Council to plan and implement this change.
In other matters relating to student travel to and from school, we have seen an increase in students riding e-scooters to school. Staff and parents are noticing some unsafe behaviours amongst a small proportion of student riders. The school is seeking opportunities for students to receive additional presentations around road safety, including e-scooters, in Term 3 but in the meantime I would like to share a useful resource with parents:
https://streetsmarts.initiatives.qld.gov.au/pmd/tools-tips/
Students who ride e-scooters to school will also be reminded that they must park their e-scooters in the school bike racks, including when it rains. Students who wish to protect their e-scooters from the rain should bring a rain cover with them. It is not permitted to park the scooters elsewhere around the school to find shelter. The school is actively seeking grants to support a cover on the bike racks but this may take some time.
Sydney Music Tour:
Good luck to our music students in Symphony, Blue Brass and Orpheus as they head to Sydney for some incredible performance opportunities. Our students and teachers deserve this opportunity and have worked hard to be able to perform music at such a high level.
Our students will be performing at such famed venues as The University of NSW, The Australian National Maritime Museum, The Chatswood Concourse, Sydney Conservatorium of Music and finally, The Sydney Opera House.
If you happen to be in the neighbourhood, or have family and friends who would like to support our students, here are the details of where and when they will be playing and how you can get tickets.

The entire community should be proud of these students and their teachers.
CIS Surveys and Uniform Surveys
Finally, a reminder about two important opportunities for parent feedback:
CIS Parent and Caregiver Survey: This survey has already been completed by nearly 200 families. Thank you. If you haven’t yet completed it please take the opportunity to add your voice to our Council of International Schools re-accreditation. Pimlico is one of only two schools to hold this accreditation status. CIS is a global organisation that quality assures schools. Our re-accreditation visit will be in Semester One 2026, and parent feedback is an important part of this process. It is also great learning for the school as wee seek to continuously improve.
Uniform Survey: It is time to review our uniform and we are seeking parent feedback around this. This is a slow and considered process and won’t impact uniforms until at least 2027. There will also be an extended transition while both the old uniform and the new uniform can be worn. If you haven’t yet completed the survey, please do so here. Students will also be provided an opportunity to add their voice through a survey next term.

I would like to wish all students and their families a safe and restful holiday and I look forward to seeing everyone again in Term 3.
Kind regards
Stephen Baskerville

Year 11 Work Experience
We are thrilled to announce that 191 Pimlico State High School students have recently completed their Structured Workplace Learning (Work Experience) as an integral part of their Certificate II in Leadership and Certificate II in Hospitality courses. This exciting achievement marks a significant step in their journey toward developing future-ready skills and confidence for the world of work.
Our school community is grateful to the 155 local employers who invested their time, expertise, and mentorship to provide our students with hands-on opportunities across a wide variety of industries. Through placements in retail, hospitality, healthcare, administration, construction, automotive, education, and many more, students gained insight into real workplace environments and put their classroom learning into practice.
This valuable experience wouldn’t have been possible without the support of our local businesses, community partners, and, of course, the families who encouraged and supported our students throughout their work placement. Thank you for helping our young people grow, learn, and discover exciting new career pathways. Congratulations to all of our year 11s. Please ensure all booklets are returned in Week 1 of next term.

Thank you to our Work Experience Businesses

Year 11 Leadership Certificate
On June 5th and 6th, Mr Di Bella and Mr Marshall's Year 11 Certificate 2 in Leadership classes attended Currajong State School's Senior and Junior athletics carnival for their Community Project.
The feedback from Currajong teachers and staff has been overwhelming and abundant. Currajong SS consistently highlighted how Pimlico students arrived promptly and were ready to jump into work immediately. Students willingly embraced every job role with no questioning and all tasks were completed to a high standard. Pimlico SHS's impact was so significant that most of the teachers and staff have already inquired if Yr. 11 students will be returning next year!
Well done to all students involved in this Community Project. Your contribution and valuable leadership skills have made a world of difference to the children of Currajong SS.

Junior Schooling
Year 10 into Year 11 Information
Your child is about to embark on an exciting journey of decision-making for their Senior Pathways in 2026 and beyond. This vital process not only aids them in preparing for life after school but also opens numerous options and opportunities.
Once your child finishes Year 10 or turns 16, they enter the compulsory participation phase, requiring them to stay engaged in learning or work until they turn 17. This stage offers various pathways—continuing at school or exploring alternative models like TECNQ, TAFE, or a apprenticeship/traineeship.
To assist in this decision-making process, we have organised a series of events and programs across Terms 2,3 and beyond.
Year 8 Community Day
On Tuesday our Year 8 students came together for a vibrant and meaningful Community Day, filled with activities focused on respectful relationships and team building. Through engaging games, group challenges, and reflective discussions, students explored important themes such as empathy, inclusivity, effective communication, and setting healthy boundaries.
It was fantastic to see their enthusiasm, cooperation, and growing awareness as they developed the social and emotional skills that support positive relationships—both in and beyond the classroom.

Around the Grounds
HOSPITALITY
Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea
Year 12 Hospitality students hosted Pimlico's Biggest Morning Tea this morning, raising $910.30 in their 40-minute lunch break. Students were entertained by the year 10/11 student band ' Bacon Bits' while they purchased a plate of food or frappe for $5, hot beverages from the coffee cart for $4.5 or a fresh fruit sorbet for $2.
All proceeds will go to the Cancer Council. This much-loved annual event is a highlight on the Hospitality department's calendar and we are very proud to support such a great cause.

ENGLISH
World War I Poetry
As part of their IA3 unit on war poetry, students in 12A General English stepped back in time through an immersive experience, designed to deepen their understanding of the realities behind WWI poems.
Students began by cracking a code to gain access to a trench environment before rotating through a series of interactive activity stations where they tended to the wounded, analysed propaganda, and remembered the fallen.
This hands-on experience brought their study of poetry to life, helping students connect with the key texts of the unit.

STEMPunks mission control
Our Year 10B Digital Technologies took to outer space last week with the assistance of Mr Walker and the team at STEMPunks running mission control!
Our budding technological cybernauts were trained in the specifics of coding autonomous robots to complete the challenge of guiding and programming their rover landers to locate, secure and move their target resources for the future of space travel!
Through hands-on Design Thinking, students coded autonomous rovers, engineered custom gripper attachments, and tackled real-world challenges. It was inspiring to see them build critical STEM and teamwork skills, preparing them for the jobs of tomorrow!

STEM Girl Power Camp
60 Year 10 students and 10 teachers were selected to participate in the Department of Education’s 2025 STEM Girl Power Camp, which was held on 19 - 23 May in Brisbane. We were fortunate to have Keith Barola selected to attend this program. She participated in a variety of events, innovative science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) workshops and networking opportunities with experts from STEM fields.
Camp students met inspiring role models from diverse fields including, engineering, medicine, chemistry, quantum technologies and mathematical modelling. Camp students explored STEM pathways at an industry location of their choosing (either Cross River Rail, TechnologyOne, the Ecosciences Precinct or the Integrated Pathology Learning Centre) and discussed the importance of STEM communication at the Queensland Museum and Wheel of Brisbane. Students also participated in a variety of hands-on activities, including world-class biomedical research techniques at SPARQ-ed and led science activities with local primary school students.
The camp fostered students' understanding of STEM's significance in society while enhancing their leadership, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and communication skills. As 2025 STEM Ambassadors, these students will now organise and deliver a STEM event during National Science Week in Term 3 (August 2025). This initiative aims to inspire others to pursue STEM subjects and careers.
We will be advertising this program to our current Year 9 girls towards the end of Term 3.

2025 Women in Manufacturing Delegation
Lalyn Entaro (Year 12) and Keelie Gravener (Year 11) represented PSHS as part of the 2025 Women in Manufacturing Delegation in Brisbane. The program called Treasures of the Earth had the students investigating some of the elements from the periodic table that are mined in QLD and they learnt about what they are used for in everyday life. Thank you to QMEA for offering this program to our students.

Pimlico Music
Our students set to play on Australia’s most prestigious stage - The Sydney Opera House
3 of Pimlico State High School’s elite musical ensembles have been selected to be part of the upcoming Australian International Music Festival, held in Sydney July 5 – 12. Our students will be performing at such famed venues as The University of NSW, The Australian National Maritime Museum, The Chatswood Concourse, Sydney Conservatorium of Music and finally, The Sydney Opera House.
Our ensembles involved are:
Symphony Orchestra: As one of the premier ensembles within Pimlico’s music program, the orchestra showcases advanced musicians across all instrumental families: woodwind, brass, percussion, and strings. Their dedication to excellence is reflected in their recent accolades, including receiving a Platinum Award at the Queensland State Schools Instrumental Fanfare Festival, progressing as regional finalists, and earning first place in the Symphony Orchestra section of the Townsville Eisteddfod.
Blue Brass: The premier brass ensemble of the school's esteemed music program, showcasing exceptional talent across trumpets, French horns, trombones, euphoniums, and tubas. They are celebrated for their consistent excellence, earning first place in the Mixed Ensemble section of the Townsville Eisteddfod for five consecutive years. Their commitment to musical distinction was further recognized when they were awarded the Most Outstanding Performance and a prestigious Platinum Award at the North Queensland Regional Final of QLD State School's Instrumental Fanfare in 2024.
Orpheus Chamber Strings: Comprising 18 talented musicians from Years 9 to 12, Orpheus is renowned for the remarkable trust and camaraderie among its members, qualities that empower them to vividly express the stories within their music. They are dedicated to community engagement, notably in Ingham, where they have become an integral part of the Australian Italian Festival over several years. In 2022, Orpheus was recognized as one of Queensland's top five ensembles, performing at the state finals of Instrumental Fanfare in Brisbane.
“The opportunity to take students from Pimlico State High School to some of Australia’s most iconic performing arts venues — including the Sydney Opera House, Sydney Town Hall and the Chatswood Concourse — was simply too good to pass up. We’re incredibly proud to represent not only Pimlico, but the wider Townsville community on the national stage at the Australian International Music Festival. Providing life-changing musical opportunities like this is part of what makes Pimlico such a special place. State schools truly are great schools.” – Pimlico SHS Head of Music & Director of Symphony Orchestra, Ashley Baxter

Music Teacher Legend, Richard Newell, set to retire!
After nearly 30 years of teaching, 28 and a half of which have been at Pimlico, Richard Newell is retiring today.
In his time in Pimlico, Richard has created countless opportunities for thousands of students, including the formation of Orpheus Chamber Strings (originally Pimlico Chamber Strings), a conductor-less performing string section - a first of its kind in Queensland Schools.
Under Richard’s guidance, Orpheus have qualified for the State Final of Fanfare 11 times and were overall Queensland winners in 2010. Their performances have enriched communities across Queensland.
Richard will continue to support students across the holidays on the Sydney Music tour. It will be a fitting end to a wonderful career.
Richard’s absence will be deeply felt. Yet, his legacy of music, mentorship, and community engagement will endure—in classrooms, concert halls, and in the lives of the many he has inspired.
On behalf of the entire Pimlico community, thank you Richard, and happy retirement!

SHEP – State Honours Ensemble Program
Recently, 42 of our music and choral students proudly represented Pimlico at the SHEP Townsville Program, an incredible opportunity run by Griffith University’s Open Conservatorium. This program brings together young musicians from across the region to work with renowned conductors and perform in a high-level ensemble setting.
This follows the success of SHEP Cairns earlier this year, with more to come in SHEP Brisbane and the Australian Honours Ensemble Program (AHEP) in September.
By the end of the year, over 100 Pimlico students will have participated in these prestigious honours programs – an outstanding achievement!

Orpheus Chamber Strings hit the road!
Last weekend Orpheus Chamber Strings travelled north for their annual Ingham Mini-tour.
The ensemble played at a host of primary schools in the Ingham region. Victoria Plantation State School (S.S.), Forest Beach S.S., Toobana S.S., and Bluewater S.S., as well as the Blue Haven Retirement Village, and a community concert at Taylors Beach.
This years trip was especially significant as it was a wonderful opportunity to bring some beautiful music to the people of this flood ravaged community. Bravo to this exceptional group of students.

House vs House Soccer Competition
In conjunction with our weekly Together Tuesday, the House Captains and Executive Student Council facilitated the first house v house soccer competition across the week. Within their school houses, students eagerly battled it out on the soccer field each break, demonstrating house spirit and teamwork to place themselves within the semi and grand final matches. Moreover, across the week we saw heaps of engagement and enthusiasm from students across all year levels!
On Thursday held our semi-final matches, with:
Phoenix vs Pandanus 1st break & Alexandra vs Royal 2nd break. In the end, after two nail-biting matches (one of which leading into penalty shootouts), we had our grand finalists: Phoenix vs Alexandra.
Friday 1st break marked the Grand final match, an exhilarating game that had much of the school on its toes. In the end, both teams were too evenly matched and ended with penalty shootouts - where Alexandra took the crown. Thank you to the Senior Student Council, House Captains and staff who volunteered their time to help organise and run this event.

In years 9/10 Aoife Bock was the runner up, speaking about "Unconditional love is everywhere- we just need to look for it!" where she took the viewpoint of love actually should be conditional, i.e. have healthy boundaries and Akira Miller spoke very well.

This qualified the girls to progress to the next stage where they played Cairns SHS this week where in the knockout tournament, our girls went down against Cairns 4-0 with 2 of those goals coming from penalties. The girls played well, but it was a tough game against a school who have a football academy. They enjoyed the bus trip and had a fun day.
Our players of the match were Cadence Corrie-Bolger (captain) for her exceptional performance in the backline and Siella Verner for her many amazing saves as goalkeeper.

QUT’s 2025 Future You Summit
Congratulations to Year 11 students Eva Goedhart & Lilli-Jay Monk who have been selected to attend QUT’s Future You Summit in the upcoming holidays. There were only 540 applications across the state.
This program is open to year 11 and 12 students and is designed to give students a glimpse into university life. It runs for 4 days in the June-July holidays each year. The program has students involved in hands-on workshops and seminars run by industry experts.
There are several different streams students can apply to be involved in. QUT supplies accommodation for regional students as well as support towards travel costs.

Pimlico Shines at the North Queensland Schools Cup!
Our talented Pimlico Palms Volleyball teams showcased their skills at the annual North Queensland Volleyball Schools Cup, competing against schools from Mackay to Cairns.
We are thrilled to announce that both our Year 12 Boys Division 1 team, coached by Mr. Reupena, and our Year 12 Boys Division 2 team, led by parent coach Ben Sheehy, went undefeated throughout the tournament, claiming gold in both divisions!
Remarkably, both teams dominated the competition, not losing a single set across the entire weekend!
We also want to highlight some outstanding individual achievements:
- MVP Year 12 Boys Division 1: Tatsuki McCool (Year 11)
- MVP Year 12 Boys Division 2: Kyron Holden (Year 12)
- Highest Vertical Jump: Nathan Mboyo, reaching an impressive 3.43m!
Congratulations to all our students for their hard work and dedication. You’ve made Pimlico proud!

Interschool Mountain Bike Race
What better way to see out the term than a full day of mountain biking at the Interschool MTB Race!

- Junior Division (Years 7/8): Leo

Sip & Yarn Afternoon Tea
On Tuesday, we hosted our Sip n Yarn afternoon tea to honour Reconciliation Week 2025- Bridging Now to Next and Mabo Day, which marks the historic 1992 High Court decision that recognised the land rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. It’s a time to celebrate the strength, resilience, and deep connection to Country that First Nations peoples carry.
Mabo Day and Reconciliation Week reminds us of the power of allyship — standing together for justice, truth, and respect. Let’s keep learning, listening, and walking forward together.
Families, if you are interested in being part of our Reconciliation Action Plan working group let Lee Kynaston (lkyna3@eq.edu.au) or Aunty Pat Hoolihan (phool4@eq.edu.au) now. We'd love to have parent voice working with us in this group.

EQI & International Students
Crash Course in Aussie Cooking
Our international students joined the hospitality class yesterday afternoon for a hands on cooking workshop learning to make some well-loved Australian dishes.
They prepared ANZAC biscuits, vegemite and cheese scrolls, lamingtons, sausage rolls, trifle- and of course, damper - the classic Aussie bush bread that gave everyone a real taste of Australian tradition
It was a fun and educational afternoon filled with learning, laughter and a whole lot of Aussie flavour.
A huge thank you to Ms Burgess for facilitating the workshop and to Kirsty Wood for your support

Farewell International Students
Last Friday on 20th June, we farewelled four of our international students -Janis, Francesca, Giorgia and Aurelia who will soon be returning to their home countries of Switzerland, Italy and Germany.
Janis, Francesca and Giorgia have been with us for one semester, while Aurelia joined us in Term 2. During their time here at Pimlico, they became valued members of our International Student Program and immersed themselves in all aspects of school life and extracurricular activities.
We extend our gratitude to the wonderful host families - the Putschers, Andreassens, Taylors and Eusebes - for opening their homes and providing these students with memorable experiences and countless opportunities.
We wish our departing students every success in the future and hope they remain connected to our school community wherever life may take them.

Hockey International Player of the Year
There is nothing Janis has not tried or conquered during his time in Townsville from winning interschool chess competitions to being named the International Player of the Year for Wests Hockey Club. Yanis certainly made the most of every opportunity!!!
We are incredibly proud of Janis for all he has achieved and the way he has embraced both school and community life. What a memorable exchange journey - well done Janis!!

STARS
All Stars Volleyball Gala Day
This term, our Stars girls proudly represented Pimlico Stars at the All Stars Volleyball Gala Day, following weeks of early morning training and teamwork.
The event brought together Stars girls from Pimlico, Heatley and Thuringowa, promoting physical fitness, teamwork, and positive relationships.
Our team’s win was a proud moment — but even more valuable was the way the girls supported one another, built confidence, and showed commitment to living active and healthy lifestyles.

Camp at Mungalla Station
This term Year 8 Stars girls attended a powerful overnight camp at Mungalla Station, where they explored Nywaigi culture, local Aboriginal history, and the impact of colonisation.
Through hands-on activities, storytelling, and the Captive Lives exhibition, the girls deepened their cultural understanding and connected with Nywaigi Traditional Owners, strengthening their sense of identity and leadership.

Student Health
I’ve had so many students tell me the thing they look forward to doing most on the weekends and school holidays is sleeping!
Teenagers are often considered lazy with all the sleeping they do but did you know that their bodies actually need this additional sleep? Sleep is essential for thinking and academic achievement, emotional health, physical health and development, decision-making and reduction in risky behaviour and accidental injury.
So, these holidays encourage your young person to get their recommended 8-10 hours sleep each night. Support them to get out and be physically active during the day, cut caffeine in the afternoons and evenings, and help them keep to a schedule that isn’t too different from their normal sleep and wake times, within 2 hours of each other is best. And keep beds for sleeping, not screens!
For more tips on how to help your young person sleep better head to the link below.
